European Union Regulatory Framework

Maritime DirectiveFrance / EU Waters

Division 240 & FFM Standards

Applies to pleasure craft, eFoils, and Motorized Water Boards (PNM) operating in French sea and inland waters.

  • Classification: PNM < 4,500 W — No boat license required (min. age 12).
  • Safety Protocols: Mandatory ECOS kill-switch, 50N PFD / neoprene suit, and 6h light signal.
  • Battery & Electrical: NF C 18-550 & CE compliance for onboard lithium energy systems.
Battery SafetyRegulation (EU) 2023/1542

EU Battery Regulation

Comprehensive battery monitoring and dynamic State-of-Health (SOH) assessment, powered by AltusFoils Battery IQ or Battery IQ Core.

  • ANNEX III Part B : Parameters for rechargeable batteries
  • ANNEX IV Part A : Parameters related to electrochemical performance and durability
  • ANNEX IV Part B : Elements to explain the measurements for parameters listed in Part A
  • ANNEX VII Part A : Parameters for determining the state of health of electric vehicle batteries, stationary battery energy storage systems and LMT batteries:
  • ANNEX VII Part B : Parameters for determining the expected lifetime of stationary battery energy storage systems and LMT batteries:

United States Regulatory Framework

US Coast Guard (USCG) & PWC Framework

In most US jurisdictions, electric hydrofoils and motorized surfboard propulsion systems are classified as Personal Watercraft (PWC) or Motorized Vessels requiring valid Proof of Ownership or Bill of Sale.

PFD Requirements

Riders must wear a USCG-approved Type III Life Jacket (Personal Flotation Device) at all times during operation.

Cut-off Switch

Wireless or tethered engine cut-off switches (ECOS) are mandatory to prevent runaway craft upon rider dismount.

State Registration & Title

Local state regulations (e.g., Florida FWC, California DBW) require vessel registration using individual component UIDs and ownership title certificates.
