EU Directive & Smart Battery Telemetry

EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) & Battery IQ Standard

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 Mandates for Light Means of Transport (LMT) & Marine Industrial Energy Packs — SOH Diagnostics, Battery Passport, and Battery IQ Core Integration.

1. Regulatory Scope & Core Mandates

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 replaces Directive 2006/66/EC, setting binding requirements for sustainability, safety, labeling, and real-time health monitoring of all batteries placed on the EU market (including LMT and electric watercraft propulsion packs).

Applicability: Marine propulsion packs, LMT batteries, and modular energy systems above 2 kWh or high-output lithium configurations.

BMS Mandate (Art. 14): Requires an advanced Battery Management System that stores operational telemetry, capacity fade, and thermal history for secondary market access and maritime inspection.

2. Battery IQ Core: SOH & Performance Metrics

Our Battery IQ and embedded Battery IQ Core BMS modules actively measure, calculate, and log dynamic battery health metrics to satisfy EU Article 14 Annex VII compliance:

State of Health (SOH) Monitoring
  • Capacity Fade Index: Real-time tracking of remaining usable capacity vs. nominal factory capacity.
  • Internal Resistance (IR): Continuous impedance calculation across individual cell series to detect aging or drift.
  • Throughput & Cycle Counter: Total energy throughput (kWh) and equivalent full-cycle logging.
  • Degradation Analytics: Algorithmic prediction of remaining useful life (RUL) under high-discharge marine profiles.
SOC & Operational Telemetry
  • State of Charge (SOC): High-precision coulomb counting combined with voltage-temperature lookup curves.
  • Thermal History Log: Continuous tracking of max/min operating temperatures and thermal event alerts.
  • Cell Imbalance Delta: Series cell voltage deviation detection to prevent localized thermal stress.
  • Deep Discharge Counter: Logging over-discharge instances to validate warranty and safety integrity.

3. Digital Battery Passport & Data Access

Starting 2026, every battery pack must carry a physical QR code linking directly to a decentralized or cloud-hosted Digital Battery Passport powered by Battery IQ telemetry:

Static Passport Data (Public)

• Manufacturer UID, model, & date of manufacture.

• Carbon footprint declaration & recycled material content.

• Battery chemistry, rated voltage, capacity, & weight.

• Extinguisher type & emergency dismantling guidelines.

Dynamic Passport Data (Authorized)

• Live SOH % and available capacity update via Battery IQ Core.

• Total operating hours, trip charge count, & discharge rate history.

• Maintenance history, module replacement, & diagnostic logs.

• Controlled access for port authorities, owners, & recyclers.

4. Safety & Marine Environmental Standards

Thermal Runaway Mitigation

Battery IQ Core features embedded hardware fuses, independent cell-level thermal sensors, and automated safety cut-off triggers before thermal runaway conditions occur.

Enclosure & Ingress Rating

CNC aluminum casing with dual O-ring sealing certified to IP68 rating, equipped with pressure equalization valves to prevent internal overpressure during high C-rate discharge.

Transport & Electromagnetic Safety

Certified under UN38.3 (T1-T8 shock/vibration/altitude tests), IEC 62133-2, and CE Low Voltage / EMC directives.
